Shopify PIM integration: edit once, update every store

Shopify PIM integration: edit once, update every store
Shopify PIM integration: edit once, update every store

Your first Shopify store started with a CSV file and a few product listings entered by hand. Today you run several stores, in several languages, with a catalogue that grows with every collection. Every time you correct a product's composition, you do it store by store, and sooner or later an error slips through.

A Shopify PIM integration fixes this at the source. Your product data lives in your PIM, and Shopify receives it ready to sell, in every store and every language.

Here's what that changes for your teams in practice, and why AI agents entering the buying journey make the question more urgent.

When the Shopify admin becomes your default product database

Shopify was built to sell, from storefront to checkout. Its catalogue has two levels, the product and its variants, plus custom fields called metafields. That model works as long as your catalogue stays simple.

The trouble starts as you grow. International brands often open one store per country or per brand, so every Shopify product listing has to be updated as many times as there are stores. Translations are managed store by store too.

Imports add their own risk. If you import a CSV without the Variant ID column, Shopify can delete a variant and recreate it with a new ID, which breaks the link with your other tools (documentation).

Finally, Shopify is only one channel among several. Marketplaces, print catalogues, resellers: each expects the same product data, in its own format. When the Shopify admin is your reference, these channels inherit a copy, errors included.

What a PIM changes for a Shopify store

A Shopify PIM integration automatically publishes product data from a PIM to one or more Shopify stores: descriptions, attributes, translations, media and prices. The PIM remains the source of truth, and Shopify receives product listings that are ready to sell.

It works because each tool has a clear role. You use the PIM to create, enrich, translate and approve product content. Shopify receives it and focuses on what it does every day: selling.

Your teams gain twice over. Your e-commerce team no longer re-enters product listings and spends its time showcasing products instead. Your product team keeps control of the master data: correct a composition once and it updates everywhere. That's the whole point of centralising your product data in a unified catalogue, whether you sell through one store or ten.

What the Quable x Shopify connector does

The Quable x Shopify connector relies on two apps: you install one in your store from the Shopify App Store, and the other appears in the PIM. Once your store is connected, you configure everything from Quable, with no development work. Here's what that changes day to day.

Update once in Quable, every store stays current

A product you edit in Quable reaches Shopify in real time, across every store concerned. For a collection launch or a catalogue overhaul, a full sync sends all your products in a single operation. Shopify limits how fast apps can write data, so schedule these bulk sends outside traffic peaks.

Only ready products reach Shopify

You set the publishing rules. A product goes to Shopify when it reaches the expected level of completeness, has been approved in the workflow and belongs to the right channel. Products still being enriched stay in Quable, out of your customers' sight.

New products can arrive as drafts, giving your e-commerce team time to prepare how they'll be showcased. A product removed from the selection can automatically go back to draft or be archived.

Several stores, languages and currencies from a single instance

A single Quable instance feeds several Shopify stores, one per country or per brand. You can copy one store's settings to the next, so you open a new market by duplicating what already works. Each store receives the PIM's translations in its own languages, with its own prices in each currency. This is the approach described in the story of Liberated Brands, which runs several markets with Shopify and Quable.

Lalique took the same approach. In a review published on the Shopify App Store in March 2023, the brand explains that it rolled out Shopify across 10 stores in 9 countries by syncing its products from Quable.

Product listings richer than the standard fields

Everything you manage in Quable can feed your Shopify product listing: detailed specifications, materials, care instructions, related products for cross-selling, visuals, videos and spec sheets. This information lands in the standard fields and in metafields, along with SEO fields and image alt text. A material you describe once in the PIM appears identically on every product that uses it.

AI agents: upstream data quality decides your visibility

The topic has taken on a new dimension with agentic commerce. Shopify now switches on its agentic storefronts automatically for eligible merchants: Shopify Catalog passes product data from stores to AI platforms. According to Shopify, this lets brands sell on ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini.

An AI agent reads attributes, compares variants and checks price and availability at the moment the shopper asks their question. That is why Shopify recommends grouping genuine variants under a single product, choosing the most precise category and describing products in factual terms. This work happens in the PIM, as our article on optimising product data for AI answer engines explains.

The connector adds a safeguard: with the completeness filter, an incomplete product stays in Quable. Whether it then appears on AI platforms depends on each store's settings in Shopify.

On the production side, Quable's AI helps your teams keep pace. Generative AI writes a product's content in one click, based on the attributes and visuals already there, with templates for the product name, the marketing description or the search-optimised description (documentation). Built-in machine translation speeds up launching in a new market, a topic we cover in our guide to translating your product content with a PIM.

Quable is also introducing AI agents built on the Ibexa Agentic Marketing Platform, currently in beta, for translation consistency, SEO and image tagging. In every case, your teams review and approve what the AI produces before anything is published to Shopify.

Shopify PIM integration: frequently asked questions

Four questions come up often when a brand is thinking about connecting its PIM to Shopify.

Do you need a PIM if you sell on Shopify?

For a single store and a small catalogue, the Shopify admin is often enough. A PIM becomes useful as soon as you manage several stores, several languages or other sales channels, because it saves you maintaining several versions of the same product listing.

Does the Quable connector manage stock?

The connector assigns variants to Shopify's inventory locations. Quantities come through a separate feed, usually from the ERP (connector FAQ).

Can you run several Shopify stores from a single PIM?

Yes. A single Quable instance feeds several stores, each with its own languages, currencies and publishing rules. You can copy one store's configuration to another.

Do you need development work to connect Quable to Shopify?

No. You install the app from the Shopify App Store, then the administrator enters the name of the Quable instance and an API token. The connector is a subscription option, activated with your Customer Success Manager.

One source, every store up to date

Shopify remains the place where you sell. Your product data is better off in a tool designed to structure it and get it approved. A Shopify PIM integration connects the two: your teams correct a product once, and every store receives it complete, in the right language, at the time you choose. Now that AI agents read catalogues, that upstream rigour translates directly into visibility.
