Import
What is an import in a PIM?
Import is the process of bringing external data into a PIM (Product Information Management) system, whether that's product references, media, templates or technical attributes. This mechanism is essential for centralising and structuring product information from a range of sources (ERP, Excel files, databases, and so on).
Imports can be done manually (for one-off updates) or automated (via connectors or scheduled flows), depending on the company's needs. For example, a manufacturer might automatically import product references from its ERP into the PIM, then enrich them with marketing copy, high-resolution images or translations before distributing them across its sales channels.
The value of import lies in its ability to save time, reduce data-entry errors and ensure data consistency. By automating this process, teams avoid repetitive tasks and can focus on improving the quality of product information.
