What is inheritance in a PIM?

Inheritance, in the context of a PIM (Product Information Management), refers to the mechanism that lets a product or category automatically retrieve the data or attributes defined at higher levels of its classification. This feature streamlines product information management by avoiding redundancy and ensuring data consistency.

For example, in a product tree, a category such as “Running shoes” can inherit the common attributes defined at the parent level “Shoes” (size, colour, material), while adding its own specific attributes (cushioning type, weight, use). If an attribute is changed at the parent level, the update automatically applies to all related products or subcategories.

Inheritance simplifies data maintenance and reduces the risk of errors, especially for large catalogues. It lets teams focus on enriching specific information while keeping product data structured and consistent.
